Burma Solar Eclipse 2010

Sunday - 10th January 2010 Arrive in Yangon

On arrival in Yangon Airport you will be met and transferred to our Superior class hotel.

This evening we take a night walk of the Shwedagon Pagoda, the landmark and jewel of the country. Later this evening enjoy a welcome dinner and drinks with the rest of the group.

Monday - 11th January Bagan

This morning we take a short flight to Bagan. After a chance to freshen up at our hotel, we set out on a guided tour to explore the archeological treasures of this ancient town. With over 2,000 stupas dotted all over the town dating from the 11th to 13th century today. Our visits include the Ananda Temple with its shinny gold spires; and important reliquary shrines of Shwezigon and Buphaya Pagodas. Also stop by a lacquer-ware cottage and observe skilled craftsmen using techniques passed down from generation to generation. Conclude the day at the colourful Nyaung Oo market.

Tuesday - 12th January Bagan

Today is free at leisure allowing you the time to explore at your own pace. Our tour manager will be on hand to offer suggestions & assistance.

For something extra special, rise early for an optional hot air balloon ride. The balloon will gently drift across the archaeologically rich countryside of Bagan providing mesmerising views of the temples and pagoda’s scattered across the plain below - a truly unforgettable experience!

Also recommended is an optional horse cart or bicycle ride through the streets of ancient Bagan town.

Wednesday - 13th January Mandalay & Mingun

This morning fly to Mandalay. Today we take a local boat across the Ayeyarwady river to Mingun and observe ‘the world’s largest ringing bell’ and Mingun Pahtodawgyi- ‘the world’s largest ‘unfinished’ pagoda’.

This afternoon back to Mandalay city there will be a tour of this former British colony before concluding the day with sumptuous dinner sampling some local cuisine.

Thursday - 14th January Mandalay & Amarapura

Today we take an excursion to the former royal capital of Amarapura. We visit the Mahagandayon Monastery with a unique prospect to observe the lunch process of hundreds of young monks. En-route we shall stop at U-Bien Bridge, one of Myanmar’s most iconic images. This afternoon and evening is at leisure.

Friday - 15th January Sagaing
Eclipse Day!!

Today we venture (approx. 1.5 hour drive) to our very special location for viewing today’s Solar Eclipse – Sagaing! Home to around 6,000 monks and nuns belonging to numerous monasteries and nunneries in the region, this important religious hub with its mysterious atmosphere will create a unique ambience for viewing the solar eclipse. We will view the longest annular eclipse of the 3rd millennium on top of Sagaing Hills!

Saturday - 16th January Inle Lake

This morning transfer for a short flight to Heho. On arrival in Heho we drive to the stunning Inle Lake located 900 meters above sea level. We shall spend a leisurely afternoon with a boat ride on the Lake and explore the water villages and floating gardens along the way.

This evening there will be a Star Party hosted by our astronomy expert.

Sunday - 17th January Inle Lake

Today we will take a half day soft trek to a nearby mountain village. Or you may choose to explore the area independently, or simply relax in your resort hotel.

Monday - 18th January Inle lake – Yangon

Today we fly back to Yangon. There is a chance for some last minute shopping at Bogyoke Aung San Market with its many stalls and vendors selling handicrafts including jewellery, woodcarving and paintings.

Tuesday - 19th January Yangon – Home

Today we bid a fond farewell to Burma. Transfer to the airport for your flight home or onward destination.
